Murals at Rainbow

Murals have an important place in Rainbow's infrastructure. Not only do the beautify the space, but they allow local (and sometimes far away) artists to show off their talents and express ideas through their art. We are proud to showcase some award winning art on our walls.

Precita Eyes

The mural at the front of the store (opposite the registers) was painted by local artists from Precita Eyes. Created to honor farm workers and the earth, it was completed just in time for the grand opening of our new Folsom Street location back in April, 1996.

Creativity Explored
The mural above the produce area is a collaborative work between Creativity Explored and Rainbow workers. In 1998 Alicia McCarthy and Eric Dekker (two Rainbow workers) painted the top half of the mural; Creativity Explored painted the bottom panels along with the Rainbow artists.

Sama Sama/Together
The Trainor Alley Mural is one of three San Francisco murals created as part of the Sama-Sama/Together project. The Rainbow site is the only mural that is the direct result of the collaboration between local U.S. artists and the Indonesian artist collective, Apotik Komik. Alicia McCarthy, from our produce department contributed to bringing the project here to Rainbow as well as the creation of the mural. The project garnered the 2004 Precita Eyes International Mural Award.
